HAL POE NAMED DEAN OF INFORMATION SERVICES AT UNION UNIVERSITY

JACKSON, June 10-- Hal Poe, associate vice president for academic programs at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., will join the Union University faculty this fall as dean of information services and associate professor of Christian studies.

Poe, who also serves as the seminary's director of professional doctoral studies and associate professor of evangelism and church growth, authored The Fruit of Christ's Presence for Broadman Press in 1990, and his second book, The Gospel and Its Meaning, will be released by Zondervan this summer. Poe has also contributed chapters and articles to a wide variety of academic compilations and periodicals.

In his new role at Union University, he will be responsible for the overall leadership of library, computing, and instructional technology resources and services.

"Hal Poe brings to this new position, created under the visionary direction of Provost Howard Newell, a rich background in academic leadership," Union President David S. Dockery said. "The position will provide academic resources to advance instructional technology for both traditional and non-traditional classrooms in both on-campus and off-campus settings. We are indeed fortunate to have a person of his experience and abilities joining our leadership team at Union University."

Poe is also active as a board member for the American Academy of Ministry and for the Association of Doctor of Ministry Education while serving as secretary of the Academy for Evangelism in Theological Education.

Poe, who joined the faculty of Southern Seminary in 1988, previously served as the Kentucky Baptist Convention's assistant director of evangelism, as a pastor, and as a prison chaplain at the Kentucky State Reformatory. He also served as associate dean at Bethel College and Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

He holds a bachelor of arts from The University of South Carolina, with a master of divinity and a doctor of philosophy from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Union University, located in Jackson, Tenn., is a four-year, liberal arts university affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. Founded in 1823, the 2,000-student institution is the oldest university in the Southern Baptist Convention.
