Likay Medlin
Marketing Major, Sardis, Tenn.
Likay Medlin had plans to attend just about any school other than Union University. Since her mom was a former nursing professor on campus, she had her sights set on something different. She was looking into art school or schools farther away from her Sardis, Tennessee, home.
Although she was a bit resistant, her mom encouraged her to talk with a Union admissions counselor. Medlin had been taking dual enrollment classes at Union, so she decided to sit down with a counselor to discuss attending Union. His enthusiasm motivated her to fill out an admissions application 鈥 though she admits she approached it half-heartedly.
As her senior year began, she still felt quite indecisive about which college to choose. She prayed, 鈥淕od, wherever you want me to go, make it really, really, really clear for me so I can鈥檛 argue with it.鈥
Much to her surprise, God made the way to Union clearer. With her mother鈥檚 prompting along with the financial aid package Union offered, the choice to attend Union became easy. Her initial dread and indecision soon gave way to peace and excitement.
Medlin, now in her junior year, has adjusted to life at Union and has built friendships that have grown stronger each year. 鈥淯nion gives you a lot of opportunities to meet your people,鈥 she said.
Although there are people from all kinds of backgrounds, she believes students have gathered at Union with a common purpose 鈥 to gain a Christian education鈥攁nd that common foundation makes meeting people a bit easier.
The close, Christian community at Union is one thing Medlin truly loves about being on campus. 鈥淭his is where I鈥檝e made true friendships that will be with me for the rest of my life,鈥 she said.
An avid crafter, Medlin enjoys knitting, sewing, scrapbooking, crocheting and nearly any other creative hobby. She often makes gifts for her sorority sisters and friends and admits that she has a special bed skirt just to hide her crafting stash under the bed.
Academically, Medlin has begun planning out the coursework for her major, and she has been impressed with her adviser, who made her a personalized spreadsheet of class options. He鈥檚 helped her plan an efficient route to her degree. Beyond her adviser鈥檚 help, Medlin said her professors have been accessible and willing to work with her when she has sought help in her classes.
