Maggie Miller

Nursing Major, Savannah, Tenn.

Growing up in Savannah, Tennessee, frequent trips to Jackson introduced Maggie Miller to Union University. Although she had friends who decided to attend Union, she initially looked into colleges elsewhere.

However, her interest shifted when she learned about Union鈥檚 strong nursing program. After a bit of prompting from her mom, she decided to apply.

Still, when she saw the tuition costs, she wasn鈥檛 sure attending Union would be possible.

When her enrollment counselor reached out and invited her to a Scholars of Excellence competition weekend, she was able to see the financial support Union offered; that鈥檚 when Union went from impossible to possible.

Now a sophomore, Miller has adjusted to life at Union, and one of her favorite things about the university is the people. After attending public high school, Miller found Union refreshing. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just a different environment,鈥 she said. Meeting new, like-minded people is one aspect of Union she most enjoys.

Events like Welcome Week initially helped her connect with other freshmen and start building friendships. But now, Miller sees that it鈥檚 not just one event; it鈥檚 Union鈥檚 culture. From Union President Dub Oliver speaking to her if she sees him on campus to new friends inviting her to lunch, she feels like there is a trickle-down effect of kindness and friendship.

As a nursing student, Miller said the program can be challenging, but she likes it. Her professors have been very supportive throughout her time at Union.

鈥淚鈥檝e never had an issue in a class or with a professor or anything that when I鈥檝e gone to that professor hasn鈥檛 gotten better,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e always offered me a productive solution. They want to talk. They want you to succeed. And that makes it easier to talk to them.鈥

Miller hopes to complete a specialized nurse practitioner degree or become a nurse anesthetist.
