Betsy Caceres, assistant professor of chemistry, had never heard of Union until the university popped up after a quick Google search.
At the time, Caceres had just graduated from Utah State University with her doctorate in biochemistry. During her job search, she began praying for God to place her in the right university. She decided to search for Christian universities that were hiring professors with her degree, and 鈥� coincidentally 鈥� the first school to show up was Union University. Although Caceres had never heard of Union, the university鈥檚 Christian values immediately stood out.
Upon arriving at Union in 2019, Caceres also noted how deeply the faculty care for their students.
鈥淚 came from other, bigger universities,鈥� Caceres said. 鈥淵ou can really see the difference. 鈥� They dedicate time to their students, they pray for their students, they ask them how they are doing. It鈥檚 shocking.鈥�
Before deciding to become a teacher, Caceres originally went to pharmacy school in her home country of the Dominican Republic to one day take over her mother鈥檚 small pharmacy. However, she soon realized that teaching was her true passion.
鈥淚 love learning,鈥� Caceres said. 鈥淪ince I was a little girl, that has been my passion. When I teach, I am also learning and researching and trying to communicate all the cool things that I have found out.鈥�
As an assistant professor, Caceres teaches biochemistry, oversees labs and conducts research with students during the summer. She seeks to implement Union鈥檚 Christian values in every one of these areas through their study of the sophistication and complexity of the human body. Through these programs, Caceres cherishes the relationships she has built with her students.
鈥淚 am praying every day that I can love them and serve them,鈥� Caceres said. 鈥淚 try to reach out and be there for them. I love the students here.鈥�
If there is one thing that Caceres wants her students to remember after taking her class, she hopes they recognize the importance of their faith in relation to their field of study.
鈥淚 want them to love God as their creator,鈥� Caceres said, 鈥渁nd I want that love that they have for creation to motivate them to do whatever it is that they are going to do next.鈥�
