John Foubert

John Foubert

Dean, College of Education

John Foubert, dean for the College of Education, has always been interested in understanding and working with people.

After receiving his undergraduate degree with a double major in psychology and sociology from the College of William and Mary, Foubert went on to receive his master鈥檚 in general psychology from the University of Richmond, later earning his doctorate in college student personnel administration from the University of Maryland.

Foubert served as the assistant dean of students for four years at the University of Virginia before realizing he desired a more classroom-oriented approach to education. He went on to serve as a professor at the College of William and Mary, eventually moving to Oklahoma State University and leading a graduate program in student development.

In addition to his vast experience in the classroom, Foubert is the author of 10 books and a scholar with over 50 peer-reviewed publications. His main areas of study focus on the prevention of sexual violence 鈥 a topic, he found, that is not often pursued by Christian researchers.

鈥淚 thought that someone with a Christian worldview should be involved in doing research on that topic,鈥 Foubert said. 鈥淲e might look at things a little bit differently than the people who do it from a secular worldview.鈥

As a result of Foubert鈥檚 research, he created the first prevention program that has ever led to a decline in sexual assault among men who underwent his program. He has given hundreds of presentations on his research to college campuses, conferences and military organizations worldwide. Additionally, he has testified before Congress, consulted with all branches of the military and serves as the Highly Qualified Expert for Sexual Assault Prevention for the U.S. Army.

In 2018, Foubert became the dean of the College of Education and brought his experience on sexual assault prevention to Union. He has spoken several times at university conferences and events and currently serves on the Title IX committee.

Before coming to Union, Foubert had been looking to move into Christian higher education, and Union鈥檚 core values immediately stood out to him. He encourages all of his faculty to implement these values in the classroom and beyond.

鈥淚 think we need to approach our teaching, our service and our scholarship from an integrated perspective that all truth is God鈥檚 truth,鈥 Foubert said. 鈥淪o, what we teach in class, what we study outside of class, and how we serve the public and each other should be rooted in the Word of God.鈥
